To Vlog Or Not To Vlog

Derek (covering his face), Deja, and I hanging out

The photo above has nothing to do with this post.

As you know, I am a huge YouTube fan.  I love watching YouTube videos.  Shockingly, I check YouTube more than my facebook page.  For awhile, I’ve been thinking about doing vlogs.  I’ve talked about vlogs in my previous post, which you can click HERE.

I don’t think I am all that interesting.  Actually, I think I am quite the opposite.  Although, I think my friends, especially my old co-workers are amazingly funny.  And the moments we have together (even thought sometimes x-rated, in a funny way), I wished I could’ve caught on tape.  For example this clip of my friend, Ronald.  Ronald randomly freaks out in a big way and my other friend and fellow fluffy2fiter, Ryan, caught it on his iPhone.

What would I vlog about?  I would generally vlog about my life kinda like how ShayCarl does.  Since I don’t have a cute family like his, I would vlog about going through Communication/Journalism school, my friends, losing weight and getting fit.  I really want to vlog Ron, Ryan, and I’s Orlando Trip this October.  I know we would really enjoy watching those videos again later in life.  I don’t want to do this to get rich or famous.  I just want to record my life as it is happening.  This is more for me than for anybody else, but if someone finds joy in it that’s great.

What’s stopping me?

  • Vlogging in public.  You don’t see a lot of people talking into a camera as they are holding it.  I don’t want people giving me weird looks.
  • Lack of good vlogging camera.  In the age of HD, everyone expects all video, especially YouTube videos, to be in HD quality.  Since I am a so-called wannabe techie, I really want the Canon Powershot ELPH 300 HS.  I don’t have a long arm (I blame my Asian-ness).  With the Canon, I don’t have to hold the camera too far away to have my whole face in the frame.  It also has great zoom, two mics, films in HD, and films in low light.
  • My low manly voice.  I’ll be the first one to admit, I have a man’s voice.  I don’t know why and I don’t know if I can change it.  I cringe at the thought of hearing my recorded voice.
  • Trolls and hater comments.  I am human like everybody else and sometimes words do hurt me.
  • People are going to think it’s lame and stupid.
  • My weight.  My face is quite round and YES, I do have a double chin.  (I am working on that.) If I look ugly in the video, I won’t post it.  And all that time on filming and editing goes down the drain.
I think I might try it out, I don’t know.  I guess only time will tell what I will be going with my vlogging itch.  Maybe I will do vlogging tags, which are bloggers answering questions.  I first encountered this with Izznit.  She did an awesome vlog with her lovable frenchie, Lily.  If you want to watch her first vlog ever, click HERE.  I enjoyed watching her.  She is so lovable.
Stay tuned to what I will do next.
Would you vlog?  What would you vlog about?

not that i’m condoning this but i once saw a vlog of this girl who did it while she was drunk and she would choose “smart” topics like politics or apartheid etc and “discuss” her opinions when she was drunk. it was freaking hilarious. of course, it was meant as a joke because all through her vlog, she’d be pouring wine while talking about her topic, get side tracked by something around her and start talking about that.

i could never vlog because 1) i have stage fright and i hate being the center of attention and 2) i would probably sound like a total tool.

if you want to do it, do it! let the haters hate or just moderate the comments.

What! Now I want to watch that girl. I would laugh my butt off.

I could never see you have stage fright. To me, you seem like a strong and awesome speaker. I’m afraid to have a Jessica Simpson moment. I would be so embarrassed.

Jen! If you feel like doing something, whether or not people will like it, I say just DO IT. Especially because what you’re planning to do is not harmful or hurtful, life is too short! :)

I’ll definitely support you (like the way you’ve been so supportive of me) <3 I think you're a wonderful person (from what I read in your blogs ^_^) and it'd be nice to have the freshness of someone genuine rather than another make-up guru/vlogger trying to make big bucks!

    You can vlog about:
    - significant things taking place in your life
    - funny moments
    - happy moments
    - how-to's, like your fav recipe, or a restaurant you're dying to share with people
    - trips! (Orlando is a great way to start I wish I vlogged mine but I was having too much fun hehe!)
    - collections! (I know this is odd, but people love seeing what other people collect LOL, I've yet to do one yet, but soon)
    - organizational tips (again how-to's)

As long as you're always sharing something with the public, they should be happy that someone has put in the time to make an expressive video to entertain!

Gluck Jen! Can't wait to see your vlogs!

I’m loving your ideas. I love the topic of collections. I don’t really have much of a collection, but I’m sure I can find something. I would love to see your collection! Maybe it might give me some inspiration. LOL

You are right. Life is too short. I should at least try and if it doesn’t work out, well, now I know. What is there to lose? It’s not like the public really knows me.

Thanks for your lovely comments! I feel the same way about you. I feel like your videos/blog post are awesome. You are super relatable and lovable. Team Val!

I’m going to try it out…when, I’m not sure…we will see.

Thanks for the linky :) And girl, you are worrying too much! I wouldn’t think twice about a girl walking around recording herself with a camera (more intrigued). And you have no idea how long it took me to set the camera at the right angle! In the end I had it looking down at me to kind of hide my round face. AND, as for your voice, I’m sure it sounds normal, you’re just not used to hearing it that way :D AND if you’re nervous i found it helps to answer questions, atleast for the first vlog. Once you get the hang of it you can just speak to the camera. cheers!

Thanks for the advice. Ya, maybe you are right. Maybe I am over analyzing everything. Girl…your face is not round. Well, I don’t think it is.

Are you planning on doing another vlog? I think you should. That would be awesome!

Random question: are you back from London? I love seeing your photos, I feel like I was in London with you. HAHA.

If you wanna do it, you should go for it! Idk if I could do it myself, though, I’m self conscious about the way I’d come across on camera… My round face, my vulgar mouth… And then I’d actually have to brush my hair hahahaha! And the hater comments kind of scare me to, I’m too emotional for stuff like that! It was actually one of my goals for this year, though, to try vlogging… So maybe by the end of the year. Maybe :)

I totally agree. I feel ya, sistah. I think we should all try vlogging at least once. Let’s do what Izznit did. She just answered questions about herself. So simple.

    I use one of my hand sewn original felt dolls if I’m filming something in real life and talk through the doll. mwahahha I don’t want to show my face on camera because even I am round and I sound like a 5 year old. ;___;

HAHA. What a great idea! I think that would be super funny. I think we should combine your young voice with my manly voice, then maybe it will become a normal sounding voice.

        mwahahaahh that’s a great idea ^^
