Foodie Eats: Ohana Lunch

Here is a little background of myself.  I love food.  I especially love cheap good food.  My dad found this gem.  His taste of cheap is greater than the taste, so I was skeptical.

Ohana (Hawaiian for family) Lunch is located right across the street from the old Beretania Safeway right next to a Vegan restaurant (how poetic, uh).  In Hawai’i, plate lunch (or box lunch) is very popular.  It stems back from the plantation days, where plantation workers during lunch would share or switch entrees.  It’s common to have a little Chinese, Japanese, Filipino, and American food on one plate.  Plate lunches has evolved.  A typical plate has two scoop rice, one scoop mac salad, and entree.  Sometimes there is a salad or some type of vegetable.

I bought the Garlic shrimp plate (full order) for $7, super cheap in Hawai’i.  I’ve seen similar shrimp plates go for $11-$14 easily.  There were about 8 decent size shrimp covered in a garlic butter sauce. The sauce had tons of chopped up garlic.   It was so delicious.  The shrimp was nicely cooked and didn’t feel chewy whatsoever.  The mac salad is not the local mac salad that I’m used to, but it’s the Japanese version.  To be honest, Japanese one taste better, it’s lighter and more potato-y.

The menu is limited, but during lunch time, I feel that you don’t need that much of a selection.

There is very limited seating and no A/C.  Since the kitchen is an open one, the dining area can get pretty hot.  I think it’s best to just take out and go.  As far as I know, parking is non-exsitant.  There is some street parking, but Young Street is so busy that it’s hard to parallel park.  I parked at the old Safeway, so that’s not too bad.  I would watch out for the security guard.

The staff is nice and friendly.  To me, the restaurant was clean, but hot.  Super cheap and fast food.  All and all, a good experience.

Maybe gotta take out and grind at home? I never ate here…I do know I miss the shrimp scampi truck in Waikiki (who knows if it’s still there or not) but yeah, not cheap.

I gotta work on my blog terms, I get asked all the time if I get paid to product review and the answer is an enthusiastic no. I wouldn’t mind having sponsors on the side bar but my content will remain unsponsored.

I know what you mean…I’m always debating if I should accept sponsorship or monetary allowances. I don’t want to look like a sell out or anything like that, but it would be nice (especially since we live in a very expensive environment) for a couple bucks here and there.

I think you have the right idea, just sponsorship on the sidebar, but content is clean. What ever you do, follow your heart AND let me know what worked for you. I’m looking for some guidance on this subject.

Shrimp scampi does sound good. I never knew Waikiki had food trucks. Have you been to those Eat the Street? I love eating there.

If I could FedEx it to you, I would. Well, something to look forward to when (not if) you come and visit Hawai’i. Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment.

Of course, I’ll be your guide–in a heartbeat! Count on it! Then we can go surfing or SUP (stand up paddle surfing). Oh, that would be a lot of fun.

Jen thanks for the comment on my Valentine blog post. Let’s take your photos!! I’m happy to go to Oahu to shoot!
So, Jen and Tania… Since I’m new to Maui, where’s the best plate lunch here? When I lived in LA I lived near Little Tokyo, and there was a similar good, cheap eats place there called Suehiro http://www.yelp.com/biz/suehiro-cafe-los-angeles. Now on Maui… guide me o-wise ones!

Awe, I would love to, but I have no one to give it to. Ah, the sad life of being a single girl on Valentine’s day.

First, I would like to welcome to your new home in Maui! Second, I loved Little Tokyo. I tried to visit there every time I’m in LA. As far as good eats on Maui, I’m not the best person to ask. Shockingly, I haven’t been to Maui…yet. In O’ahu, there is tons of cheap good Japanese food. If you are in O’ahu, I’ll show you some.

I love your photos. I’m one of THOSE people, who bought an iPhone and instantly became obsessed with taking photos. I’m always on YouTube looking at photography tutorials. LOL
