Do or Don’t: Photos on the Cloud

I’m taking an online class about social media at my local community college.  This week, we are talking about photography, specifically Instagram (follow me, Jen808) and websites like Flickr.

As part of my homework, I need to share my Flickr account onto my blog.  I’m going to honest, I’m old school when it comes to photo storing.  Ever since digital cameras has taken over film, I hardly ever print my photos.  Instead I store them on my computer and back it up onto an external hard drive.  With that said, at any moment my photos can be completely disappear at any moment.

I’ve been kinda dragging my feet with finding a good and reliable cloud-based website.  I want to know what’s your favorite way to store your pictures online and why.

I go the digital and external hard drive way, too. I only print photos if I get a frame as a gift or to give to relatives. I’m wary of online storage due to privacy. Yep, totally old school :)

Yes, old school unite! My friend is getting married and she is trying to make a collage of her and her fiance’s earlier pictures. Anyway, her external hard drive died recently and now her past five year relationship of photos are gone. I’m afraid that will happen to me one day. *sigh* what to do?

Oh no! I hope she can regain some the images from family and friends. Of course, it’s not the same. Yes, this is definitely a advantage for online storage.

I hope so too. If I find something I like, I’ll let you know.

Ok, this gets complicated for me. I’ve been using Picasa but their cap makes me flittery. Then I added Flikr and Photobucket to my collection of photo storage stuffies. But then as far as actual “cloud” world goes I’ve been getting into the Amazon cloud services for a various set of reasons. It’s just complicated stuff isn’t it? What’s your favorite?

    • March 17, 2012 at 10:36 AM #

LOL. That’s pretty complicated, but I totally understand what you mean. I feel like each website has good and bad things to them. I wish I could add all the good onto one site.

I don’t have a favorite yet. I’m still trying to figure out what my options are. If you had to pick your favorite, what would it be?

Losing photos SUCKS. When my computer crashed a few years ago (it was the MacBook I’d had since high school haha!), I lost a ton. Mostly high school pictures, hula pictures, and evidence of some crazy nights hahahaha! Plus when my last iPhone died, AT&T was only able to recover some of the photos (I hadn’t yet backed them all up to my comp). I honestly can’t even remember what some of the photos were, so I guess it’s not that big of a deal… But now I try to backup my phone to my laptop at least once a week (usually more since I’m syncing podcasts every few days).

And because I’m stupid and don’t learn, I still don’t have a backup system for my laptop. I’ve heard good things about Carbonite, and I’ll probably give them a try sooner rather than later. They have an unlimited yearly plan that’s pretty reasonable.

As far as sharing photos online, I use Flickr. There’s a good community there, it’s pretty user friendly, and I can embed photos straight to my blog (though lately I’ve been storing photos on my site anyway). I also have a 500px account that I should start to take advantage of. It looks so much better than Flickr, but isn’t anywhere near as popular. So far it seems to be attracting more serious photographers, though, so I don’t know if silly pictures of my dog will really fit in lol!

OOOh, that sucks losing all those photos. If it makes you feel any better, I don’t have much photos from High School. LOL I don’t know where they all went. I’ve thrown it away, which is super stupid on my part.

I’ve heard great things about Carbonite, too. If you do go with them, let me know how it goes.

I have a Flickr account too, but there is only one photo on it. LOL I might just stay with flickr, but I don’t know….still debating. LOL

I used to have many plastic bins of CD-ROM backups of photos… now decayed and lost forever. I used to back up to two separate terabyte drives… one of which died, and the other I’ve not kept up with. Basically, the only motivation I have to “backup” photos is to also share them online. But I also want to hedge my bets, because who knows what service will still be around in five years?

So I upload to Flickr, and I love Flickr, despite its Yahoo! ownership. But I also upload to Picasaweb/Google. For both I pay for extra storage. And of course I upload to Facebook. Everyone posts photos to Facebook. Between the three, I hope to have better luck in the long run than I did with optical media and external drives. And I’m always eyeing additional services (i.e. Smugmug, Photobucket, 500px, etc.). Six copies are better than three!

Thanks for the advice, Ryan. You know, I had the same apprehension with Flickr and Yahoo!. I figured if Burt suggested it, it must be good, right? I think I might do what you are doing, just loading up my pictures on multiple platforms, so when one goes “belly up”, I already have it stored on another. I’m still upset about Picnick closing down. There goes my favorite FREE photo-editing website.

I’ve never heard of Smugmug or 500px. I’m going to look into it. Thanks again. Give Jen a big hug for me. I know tomorrow is a big day for her.

Hi Jen, you shared your entire Flickr account in your post. I just wanted you to share one photo from your Flickr page. But that’s okay, I think you get it.

Hey Burt!!! Thanks for visiting. I’m sorry that I didn’t add an actual photo from my Flickr account. I must’ve misunderstood or forgot. I think it’s the latter. LOL Sorry about that and thanks for letting that slide.
