Calvin & Susie is not like any other pet store in Hawai’i. This store strive for all natural, organic, and (mostly) local products. No corn meal or corn byproducts in this store, even their toys are made with the highest (and sometimes recycled) quality. Unlike other pet stores, Calvin & Susie is decently priced, which I was shocked about. C&S is located in Kapahulu in the Kilohana Square.
The layout of the store is nice, neat, and modern. The black hard wood floor ensures that your pup’s pee won’t destroy anything. Every item has it’s own cubby hole, which makes finding things a breeze. I did notice that a lot of their stuff was more the eye level of the pet then the owner. I can only imagine Sumo or Scruffy chewing and sniffing the bottom shelf a lot.
There was a lot of doggie toys, most of them being either soft, tough, rubber, floaties or stuff-less. I had a hard time picking just one toy for Sumo’s Birthday. I felt that I needed to touch every single item in there. The aisle were a bit narrow, but luckily I was the only one in the store.
I found there are a lot of unique things. I’ve had pets my whole life and I even worked for a Vet hospital for a couple of years and thought I had a leg up on pet stuff.
One of the cool things I saw was these “bungee” leashes. My friend had a tragic accident with those retractable leashes. Her little one pulled a little too hard where the cord snapped, unfortunately, a car hit him, which resulted in his death. Ever since then, I’ve been anti-retractable leashes. The dog was only 6 lbs, can you imagine a 50 lbs dog? Very sad.
How about some doggie shoes? Sumo has sensitive paws and the parks filled with pesticide, I think it would be a good idea to invest in some, until I saw the price tag. These bad boys will set you back easily $100.
They had a lot of great pet beauty products. I went crazy with sniff and reading, surely it looked and sound so fancy that I wanted to use it on myself.
I love buying pizzles, but I learned from the nice saleswoman that deer or moose antlers are better. They are natural and easier to digest. She informed me that the deer/moose are never hurt in this process. When their antlers grow too long, they hit it up against a tree, giving themselves a “hair cut”. This antler company picks them up, cleans, and polishes/sands them smooth.
There was a lot of different types of clothing for your small pooch. Sorry bigger dogs, none for you….yet. I found the kimono and leather one too cute. I wish there was an aloha shirt, but no such luck.
