100 Movies Challenge (Need Your Help)

Jaina is currently doing a challenge called 100 Movies, which got me thinking…I like movies.  I think I can watch 100 movies in “x” amount of time.  Now, thinking that I can and actually doing it are two different things that I often times get confused.  Anyways, I’m doing it.

Jen, from Jenkakio.com, will be watching 100 movies (old and new) in one year.

This list will be on movies I’ve never seen before.  With that said, I need your help.  I need some suggestions on what to watch.  Feel free to leave a list of movies that you feel that everybody should see.  I’m open to any genres, so feel free to let loose.  I’m not sure if comedy routines would fall into the 100 movies challenge, but I am allowing documentaries.

    • July 14, 2012 at 1:49 PM #

OHMG! You have to watch The Avengers. I know Scarlett is not my favorite either and she was kinda in the movie a lot. Honestly, funniest and action packed movie. It was so awesome.

      • July 16, 2012 at 2:32 PM #

ugh every time i see her, i want to punch her in the face. if she’s in the movie a lot, i’ll only complain through the whole thing LOL

      • July 18, 2012 at 6:38 PM #

LOL. You make me laugh. Ya, you will be punching all throughout the movie. Your hubs will walk out with a black eye. LOL

I can’t wait to dive into your movie selection. I’ve seen a couple of them, like Pulp Fiction (which was an awesome movie, by the way). I hope I can watch all of them. I’m actually quite scared of “Clockwork Orange”. I have never seen it before, but for what I heard about this movie…it kinda scares me.

Have you been working on your 100 movies list? I think I can add some movies on your list too!

Clockwork Orange has a happy ending — mostly.

      • July 14, 2012 at 6:17 PM #

LOL Too bad it’s not happy all throughout the movie. Actually, one other person voted for Clockwork Orange, so I’ll be watching that soon.

A great place to find a wide genre of movies is from UH Manoa’s Sinclair Library they have such a range from many different cultures, documentary style, action, to US movies that rocked the box office. Not to mention that they are free. Another way to save money is to hit up the public library system – $1 for 7 days. I think I told you about these before, but Lola Rennt (Run Lola Run), Kamikaze Girls, Amelie are some of my favorite foreign films. I really like american bollywood like bride and prejudice and bend it like beckham.

    • July 14, 2012 at 11:25 AM #

I never knew about UH Manoa’s Sinclair Library. I’m going to have to check that place out. I wished our library on campus was like Sinclair.

I remember you telling me about the public library. I should re-purchase my library card. I still have a grip with them. Okay, you give a 5 year old a library card, right? 20 years later, you no longer have that card and they want you to buy a new one. I feel like after 20 years, they should reset your card status and get another free card.

Great list. I haven’t seen any of them, but want to. Thanks for all your help.

      • July 14, 2012 at 3:18 PM #

We should go together since they made you replace my card case it was too old. I will totally go with you and we can argue with them cause that is some lame ass bullshit they are playing. Not cool. Plus they didn’t issue that card to they issue it to your parents cause they are legally responsible. Darn bureaucracy.

Oh and you don’t necessarily have to go there you can search the system on line and have the requested items sent to HCC library for your to pick up.

      • July 14, 2012 at 6:22 PM #

I know! The last time I was there, they told me that I had to get buy a new one. Although, it’s only $5, but still. Oh wait…is it still $5? With my luck, it could be $15 or something. Oh hell no. Ya, we should go by and roam the library. You need to teach me how to order things online and stuff like that. I don’t even know how to do that. I’m so behind!

        July 14, 2012 at 5:48 PM #

Sinclair Library will forward any of your movie requests to HCC library and you have 7 days from when you pick them up to return them, back to HCC. All free.

      • July 14, 2012 at 6:16 PM #

No ways! Awesome. I’m going to use that service. I’m pretty bad at returning DVDs on time. I have two DVDs from Netflix from a year ago. Honestly, I lost those DVDs. I just don’t have the guts (or money) to tell Netflix. LOL

  4. July 13, 2012 at 8:51 AM #

I will try to think of movies you probably have not seen, but might love. Here are a few titles.

The Man Who Would Be King (1975) with Sean Connery and Michael Caine (Favorite!)

The Worlds Fastest Indian (2005) with Anthony Hopkins

Ironweed (1987) with Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975) with Jack Nicholson and Louise Fletcher

Raging Bull (1980) Robert Deniro and Joe Pesci

True Romance (1993) Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette
(There is a great scene with Christopher Walken and Dennis Hopper)

Have you seen any of these? I’ll contemplate and suggest more later.

P.S. 100 MOVIES – I think you could do it in 6 months!

    • July 14, 2012 at 11:02 AM #

I can’t wait to watch some of these movies. They are all classics that I’ve never seen before. The only movie I saw was “True Romance”. To this day, Bard Pitt’s stoney character still cracks me up. Too bad he dies. LOL

I was thinking that I could do it in 6 months, but I don’t know if I can keep up when school starts. You should do your own 100 Movies. So far, you watched more movies this Summer than I have.

      thanks for your help!!!

this might be fairly easy for me (not timewise) because i haven’t seen movies in forever, so there’s a lot i haven’t seen.

some i’ve randomly seen on netflix:

    in the weeds
    marigold
    revenge of the bridesmaids

battle royale (friend told me it was the original hunger games?)

totally drawing a blank right now, but will throw out some more as they come to mind.

    • July 14, 2012 at 10:53 AM #

I know what you mean by the whole time restraint. I hate deadlines! LOL

Great selections on movies, if you can think of more, lmk. I’ve always seen “Revenge of the Bridesmaids” as my top 10, but I never really gave it any thought.

I’ve seen “Battle Royale”. OMG, great movie. It’s a bit gory, but super good. When I first heard of the “Hunger Games,” the first movie I thought of was “BR”.

Thanks for all your help and good luck on vlogging! I can’t wait to see your videos.

Watch “Who the F*ck is Jackson Pollack?” and “Exit Through the Gift Shop”

    • July 14, 2012 at 10:46 AM #

Great minds think alike. I’m dying to watch “Exit Through The Gift Shop.” After Berlin, I’ve become interested in street art. I find it so fascinating.

      Thanks for your help!

  7. July 14, 2012 at 7:33 AM #

Hi Jen! Here are some suggestions: The Last Kiss, that Elmo documentary (forgot the name), Slum Dog Millionaire, Butterfly Effect, Momento.

    • July 14, 2012 at 10:41 AM #

Hey Lisa!! Great list. I haven’t seen almost all of them. I’ve seen Butterfly Effect and the ending always makes me cry. LOL I’m such a baby. I’m really interested in “Being Elmo: A Puppeteer’s Journey”. That sounds super interesting! Thanks for your input. I really appreciate it!

  8. July 15, 2012 at 6:32 AM #

    Hope you enjoy the challenge.
The following are movies that influenced me and one’s I think you’d enjoy
    The Piano
    Suddenly, last summer
    Judgment at Nuremberg
    The Withces
    Dangerous liaisons
I could go on but these are the only ones that spring to my mind at the minute.

    • July 19, 2012 at 11:00 AM #

Awesome!!! I can’t wait to dive right into your list. I’ve heard of all these movies, but never watched them. I know already that I’m going to love them! Thank you so much for taking the time to read and comment on my blog. Cheers!

  9. July 15, 2012 at 10:44 PM #

I’m going to give you a really random list here. A smattering of cheesy, fun, serious, and all of them rolled into 1!

    Man on Wire
Senna (best documentary I have EVER seen)
    Headhunters
    TrollHunter
    The Breakfast Club
One Flew Over the Cuckoo\’s Nest
We Need to Talk About Kevin
    Beginners
    A Perfect Getaway
    Road to Perdition
    Chronicle
    The Thing (original)
    The Warriors
    How to Train Your Dragon
    Rango
    Submarine
    127 Hours
    V for Vendetta
    Never Let Me Go
    Buried
    [REC] (original spanish version)
    Mesrine
    The Orphanage
    Office Space
    Triangle

    I’ll stop now!

    • July 19, 2012 at 10:58 AM #

That’s my girl! I was wondering when you were going to give me your list! I love your list. I will be adding it to my excel sheet, which is growing a mile a minute. It’s so cool to see other people’s favorite movies. I feel like I understand them more by their movie selection. I don’t know if that make any sense. LOL

  10. July 18, 2012 at 11:07 PM #

Hi Jen! Sounds like a fun challenge. Here are few in random order (keeping in mind your like horrors):

    [REC] (Spanish, 2007), and [REC]2
    Shutter Island
    Event Horizon
Straw Dogs (1971, with Dustin Hoffman)
    Soylent Green
    The Warriors
Charade, Roman Holiday and Breakfast At Tiffany’s (if you’re an Audrey Hepburn fan)
Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner (1967)
And Then There Were None (1945)
    The Dirty Dozen
    The Great Escape
    The Passion of the Christ
Romancing the Stone, and Jewel Of The Nile
    The Witches
    Howl’s Moving Castle
    The Princess Bride
Oldboy (2003 – great movie but a tough viewing experience)
    The Host (2006)
Lady Vengeance, and Sympathy For Mr Vengeance
    The Untouchables
    Dirty Harry
    The Orphanage (2007)
    The Shining
    The Exorcist
    Rosemary’s Baby
    Stepford Wives (1975)

I second Memento, Battle Royale (I found the sequel a bit disappointing, though) and One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest. If you’re going to watch the latter, don’t want to spoil anything but maybe do a Jack Nicholson double bill and follow it up with Anger Management.

    • July 19, 2012 at 10:41 AM #

Awesome list!!! I can’t believe you remembered that I liked horror. You are so awesome. Thanks for you suggestions. I am adding them to my excel sheet. I can’t wait to dive right into them.

      • July 21, 2012 at 10:32 PM #

Glad to help. I’ve got a good memory for fellow horror enthusiasts. I don’t think my recall would be as successful if you were into another genre and RomComs :D

      • July 22, 2012 at 4:09 PM #

HAHA. I think I feel the same way, Angelique. It’s far easier (for myself) to remember really good horror movies than a RomCom.

  11. July 20, 2012 at 9:21 AM #

Ooohh, fun challenge! I really like this movie called The Life of David Gale with Kate Winslet and Kevin Spacey. It wasn’t too popular when it came out, so maybe you haven’t seen it yet? And I have a zillion documentaries in my Netflix queue, lol. The one I’m gonna watch next is Grizzly Man. Have you seen Marley? That’s one I watched & loved recently. The September Issue, Man On Wire, and Joan Rivers: Piece of Work are some of my other fave docs!

    • July 20, 2012 at 4:41 PM #

Thanks for your suggestions. I never heard of “The Life of David Gale”. I’m going to check it out. I want to expand my movie…experience. LOL I don’t know if that’s even the correct word, but you know what I mean.

I’m DYING to watch Marley. I remember reading that you saw it. I’m so jealous! LOL I’ve seen Grizzly Man and that was good. The ending was kinda hard to watch/hear.

  12. July 21, 2012 at 6:44 PM #

Have you seen Inception? You really need to. Also – if you haven’t – Hitch, The Adjustment Bureau, and The Help.
The Help was really really good. If you haven’t seen it, definitely watch it.

    • July 22, 2012 at 4:26 PM #

I love Inception! What a great movie!!!! I’m still wondering about the ending. I think he was in the real world. What do you think? I haven’t seen The Adjustment Bureau or The Help, so I’m going to add that to my list. Thank you so much for your help!!!
